List Makers
Many of us are list makers. We create lists that serve as guides, reminders and goal trackers. We build and implement lists like: to-do lists, grocery lists, play lists, bucket lists, contact lists, and (the sometimes joked about) honey-do lists. Lists are more than just exercises in penmanship; they are helpful tools that help us to navigate our way toward a productive day.
While, to some, it may seem that sending multiple messages or “tweets” limited to 140 characters does not sound like part of a productive day, the fact is that many businesses are using Twitter successfully to connect with their customers, protect and promote their brands, and search for information. With the recent addition of the new “Lists” feature,
Twitter continues to mature into a more useful tool for businesses and individuals alike.
What are Twitter Lists?
So what are Twitter Lists about? According to the Twitter blog: “The idea is to allow people to curate lists of Twitter accounts. For example, you could create a list of the funniest Twitter accounts of all time, athletes, local businesses, friends, or any compilation that makes sense.” Twitter lists can be used to help keep information more organized, while providing a great way for people to find other Twitter users to follow.
In general, Twitter Lists make Twitter more useful, more manageable and, if you enjoy making and using lists, more fun. Maybe you haven’t tried using Twitter before. Or maybe you signed up months ago but found yourselves a bit overwhelmed and scratching your head about who to follow or where to find information relevant to your interests. It is probably worth taking the time to login at Twitter.com and experience the usefulness of Twitter Lists. Twitter Lists offer the more seasoned Twitter user an opportunity to make things a bit more organized, find new “tweeps” to follow and lots more.
Where to Start
When exploring lists for the first time, a good way to begin is by visiting the Twitter pages of those you enjoy following. If they have created lists you will see them displayed in the sidebar of their Twitter page under the heading “Lists”. Click on a list that interests you to browse the twitter users followed in that list. On the list page you will also be able decided if you would like to become a follower of the list. Simply click on the “follow this list” button to follow a Twitter List you are interested in. To get you started, here is a list of South Jersey Business people using Twitter: http://twitter.com/samuraivt/sjbiz.
Creating lists of your own is simple too. On your own Twitter account’s home page find the text in the Lists sidebar section that reads “New list”. When you click on “New list” a dialogue box will pop up that allows you to choose a list name and whether or not the list is public or private. After you’ve chosen your new list’s title and privacy setting, Twitter displays the option to search for people to add to your new list. Use search to find users to add to your list or simply add users to your list as you visit their individual pages. A button labeled “Lists” is displayed under the profile picture and over the tweets on each user’s page. Click the “Lists” button to manage what lists you would like to add a user to.
A Helpful List about Lists
Twitter Lists are a helpful feature and tool that can help us to keep organized and on track much like the other types of lists we use on a regular basis. Here’s a short list of resources for you to consult if you’d like to learn more about this useful Twitter feature:

Each year the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce makes donations to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Gloucester County, and yet it is likely that most Chamber members are not aware of the role that those dollars play in the success of the Clubs.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Gloucester County were formed in 2005 from the merger of the Boys & Girls Club of Glassboro and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Paulsboro to create a County wide organization that would serve more children and garner County wide support. The mission of the Clubs is to “inspire and enable all young people, especially those that need us the most, to reach their full potential as responsible, productive, caring adults.”
Why is a Boys & Girls Club needed in Gloucester County? Consider these facts;
- 15-19 year olds in the United States account for more than 20% of all violent crime
- In 2007, 9.9% of youth 12-17 years old were using some form of illicit drug
- Less than 25% of grade school students are proficient in American History and civics, subjects meant to prepare the to be responsible citizens
- Every 26 seconds a child in the United States drops out of school; it is a silent epidemic facing our Country today
- It costs $70,000 a year to incarcerate a prisoner but only $1,000 a year to provide Boys & Girls Club programs to a child
The Clubs play a vital role in promoting good character and citizenship and in helping youth understand and address the problems that they face today. With programs in character and leadership, health and life skills, the arts, sports and recreation and education and technology, the Clubs are well positioned to assist youngsters in developing life skills and providing opportunities for service to the community.
Do these programs work? Yes. According to a Harris Survey of Boys & Girls Club alumni;
- 85% say that staff members taught them right from wrong
- 81% say that being in the Club taught them a sense of responsibility
- 77% attributed their good leadership skills to the Club
- 51% say that the Clubs saved their life
The Chamber and the Clubs, working together, provide the education and resources that are necessary to create a new reality for some of the County’s most needy children. These children will grow and develop into Gloucester County’s future business community and the next generation of Chamber members.

Did You Know?
When you're vehicle is damaged in a car accident you can take to any repair facility that you choose. It does not matter if the accident was your fault or if someone ran into you. It isn’t like an HMO health insurance policy where you are limited in your choice. You have the right to choose your repair facility and it won't cost you anything more to take it to the shop of your choice.
When you have an insurance claim filed for a vehicle accident you only need ONE estimate. The only estimate you need is the estimate from the repair facility that you choose, since you are allowed to take your vehicle to the shop of your choice.

Did you know that volunteering leads to a longer life?
A 2007 study from the Corporation for National & Community Service on volunteerism shows that those who help others through volunteering have lower mortality rates and improved mental health. In challenging times like these the report said “Volunteer activities can strengthen the social ties that protect individuals from isolation during difficult times, while the experience of helping others leads to a sense of greater self-worth and trust.”
Did you know that your charitable giving will enhance your revenue growth?
A 2006 study by researchers at NYU Stern School of Business and University of Texas at Dallas School of Management used a large scale sample of corporate giving over a ten year period. They found for firms in industries that “are highly sensitive to consumer perception, corporate giving is associated with subsequent sales growth.”
